The final installment of the Engelsfors Trilogy—an international sensation with rights sold in 29 countries—The Key combines thrilling action and dark magic with all the passion and drama of teen life. The result is nothing less than explosive. By the end of the second book, Fire, the last defense against the mysterious, demonic forces that have been plaguing Engelsfors.
The Chosen Ones are still coming to terms with their loss when evil strikes again, barely a month after the showdown in the school gym. They have no chance to recover, and no choice but to rally together to try to prevent the apocalypse—even while their personal dramas threaten to tear them apart.
Time is running out for the Chosen Ones to fulfil the prophecy and save the world, but whether they succeed or not, one thing is certain: Everything will change.
How much do I love this series? The fact that I’m buying the UK edition instead of waiting six more months for the book to release in the United States (and that I did the same for the second book, Fire) should give you some sort of clue. If you like character driven books about witches and friendship and teenage girls discovering powers, this is the series for you.
All the main characters in this series are girls who come from different backgrounds and are flawed and strong in their own ways and have to learn to work together to save the world. The girls are intentionally introduced to mirror stereotypes (the partier, the smart girl, the mean girl, etc.) and as the series continues, the characters develop and are explored to greater depth. They develop friendships and begin to understand each other in a way they didn’t before. There’s a wonderful slow-burn romance between two of the girls and it’s probably my #1 book OTP and I can’t wait to see where it goes in the next book. (It was also one of my first experiences reading about a romance between two girls in a fantasy book and I appreciate that). There’s a body swap. A BODY SWAP. What more do I need to say?
I’ve been waiting for The Key to come out since Summer 2013, about a year and a half ago. The wait was particularly frustrating since for most of the time I’d been waiting, the third book had already been out in Sweden. There are just no words for how excited I am to finally have this book in my hands and see my girls again.
